Hakeem Nicks seems to have taken the next step, Victor Cruz has been exciting when not putting the ball on the ground, Mario Manningham appears healthy and ready to contribute, and even tight end Jake Ballard has made some plays.
However, Eli Manning lacks that one big target that he grew accustomed to in the days of Plaxico Burress.
ESPN reported today that the Denver Broncos are looking to trade Pro-Bowl wide receiver Brandon Lloyd and are only seeking a third, fourth or fifth-round draft pick in return.
The Broncos apparently feel confident moving forward with Eddie Royal, Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker as their receiving core.
Lloyd currently leads the Broncos with 19 receptions for 283 yards. He led the NFL with 1,448 receiving yards last season.
Several teams including the Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans have expressed interest.
Hello, Jerry Reese, you there?
Lloyd is a huge target that could fit nicely into the Giants system. Nicks, Manningham and Cruz would all still have a role, and they may even wind up getting more touches since the defense has to take Lloyd’s playmaking abilities into account.
For a late round pick, the Giants could have themselves the big target they’ve desired since the Burress incident. They drafted the six-six Ramses Barden a few years ago, but injuries and lack of production have kept him off the field.
Lloyd has garnered a reputation as being somewhat of a troublemaker, but maybe a change of scenery would do him well, even though the Broncos are already his fourth team in nine seasons.
The NFL trade deadline is this upcoming Tuesday, so expect a deal to be made relatively soon.
Do I think the Giants can survive without Lloyd? Absolutely.
But he would bring a different dynamic that this team has sorely lacked: a big play threat every time he touches the ball.
Nicks and Cruz may have this ability someday, but Lloyd is a proven commodity.
Let’s see if the Giants will pursue a deal. In a division where the preseason favorite Eagles have floundered and the Redskins and Cowboys are nothing special, the Giants can make a run at the NFC East crown with Lloyd lining up on the outside.
