New York Giants Cap-BOOM: Preseason Game One vs Panthers

Last night the Giants lost their opening preseason game to their old nemesis the Carolina Panthers. Tom Coughlin expressed disappointment (as usual) and to judge from the tenor on a number of Giants fan sites today the team just failed to make the playoffs for the third straight season. If you did not see the game, you can read the official recap here.

Player of the game: Michael Boley, scored the only New York touchdown, and had a very nice open-field tackle. Clearly our linebacking corp is in good hands.

Runner-up: Jason Pierre-Paul. 2 sacks against the Panthers' first teamers. This guy is the real deal!

Dud of the game: Lawrence Tynes. To be fair, they shouldn't have asked him to kick a 56-yarder, but now he's hurt. Last time this happened, his replacement went to the Pro Bowl. Maybe we can finally get a real kicker. Special teams coverage remains pretty awful and the returners were nothing special either. But there's hope for them. Times is running out for Tynes. Without those missed field goals, the Giants win this game.

Turning Point: Despite a lackluster offensive performance, the Giants had the game well within reach until a missed angle by the third string secondary led to a 20-10 lead in the 3rd quarter. Obviously those guys won't be playing in a month.

Biggest surprise: Evan Thomas and Domenik Hixon both excelled with the backup offense, making some spectacular catches in traffic. Steve who? Also: our three-headed running attack, Bradshaw, Jacobs and Ware all looked fantastic both at running routes and at screens.

Biggest let-down: Will Beatty. Other than him, the new offensive line appears to be gelling well. On the very first offensive play, Beatty let a defensive end run untouched into the backfield and Eli Manning's timing never recovered (although he still had some nice completions to Nicks).

Prognosis: Cautiously optimistic. I wanted more, but I'll get more. Keep the faith, G-Family!
